Cat Rest Glossary

Useful terms for reading articles and writing clearer field notes.

Baseline

The usual behavior of one individual cat in familiar conditions, useful for recognizing changes over time.

Crepuscular

Typically active especially around dawn and dusk. Individual schedules can shift in response to environment and people.

Nocturnal

Primarily active at night. This term is often confused with crepuscular activity.

REM sleep

A measured stage of sleep associated with rapid eye movement and distinctive physiological activity. It does not reveal specific dream content.

Resting

A quiet period that may involve wakefulness or sleep; lying still alone does not establish a sleep stage.

Safe place

An accessible location where a cat can retreat and feel protected; can include a covered bed, box or stable elevated spot.

Resource competition

Difficulty obtaining access to key resources, including beds, food, water or litter, sometimes without conspicuous fighting.

Environmental enrichment

Opportunities and surroundings that support normal behavior and welfare, such as play, scratching, safe exploration and appropriate resting choices.

Sleep–wake cycle

A pattern describing when a cat is active, resting or sleeping over time; affected by age, health and environment.

Observation diary

A record of what occurred and its context, without claiming certainty about why the cat behaved that way.

Welfare

The animal’s wellbeing, including opportunities for comfort, appropriate behavior and avoidance of distress.

Red flag

A concerning symptom or pattern that suggests further veterinary assessment, especially when associated with sudden change or physical illness.

A term can help you describe behavior. It does not by itself diagnose the cause of a cat’s behavior or prove a particular emotional state.
